IB Primary Years Programme (PYP)

We cater to students studying Maths and English in the IB Primary Years Programme.

The IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) is a curriculum framework designed for students aged 3 to 12 years. It focuses on the development of the whole child as an inquirer, both in the classroom and in the world outside. Through this program students learn how to think for themselves and take responsibility for their own learning through an inquiry-led approach.

The programme offers a transdisciplinary, inquiry-based and student-centred education with responsible action at its core, enabling students to learn between, across and beyond traditional subject boundaries.

The PYP curriculum framework is built upon the following three pillars:

The Learner

This describes the outcomes for individual students and the outcomes they seek for themselves (what is learning?).

The PYP curriculum recognises learners’ innate potential to inquire, question, wonder and theorise about themselves, others, and the world around them. This understanding of how students learn is foundational to the inquiry-based and concept-driven transdisciplinary model of learning and teaching. As a result, PYP students demonstrate the agility and imagination to respond to new and unexpected challenges and opportunities, and to take action for a better and more peaceful world.

The PYP acknowledges the unique needs of early learners, aged 3 to 6 years. The programme recognises that learners in this age range require approaches to learning and to teaching that are appropriate their developmental stage, and also recognises the importance of play as the vehicle for inquiry. Learning in the PYP classroom therefore takes place in dynamic environments that promote play, discovery and exploration.

Learning and Teaching

The Primary Years Programme ensures that learning is engaging, relevant, challenging and significant and adopts a transdisciplinary and conceptual inquiry approach. It provides learning that values concepts, promotes meaning and understanding, has relevance beyond subjects, and transcends borders connecting to what is real in the world. The programme challenges students to engage critically and creatively with significant ideas beyond the surface level of knowing.

PYP students learn to appreciate knowledge, conceptual understandings, skills and personal attributes as a connected whole. They can reflect on the significance of their learning to take meaningful action in their community and beyond. Through this process of learning in the PYP, students become competent learners, self-driven to have the cognitive, affective and social tools to engage in lifelong learning.

The Learning Community

The IB learning community views the world as the broadest context for learning, where everyone involved in the life of the school is recognised: students and their families, all school staff members, other important adults in the students’ lives and the community at large. It builds shared understandings and agreements for highest quality learning and teaching, and for the well-being of its members.

PYP schools support children to:

  • Develop knowledge, conceptual understandings and approaches to learning
  • Become internationally-minded individuals
  • Develop the attributes of the IB learner profile

The PYP Exhibition

In the final year of the PYP, students take part in the PYP Exhibition. The Exhibition is an authentic process for students to explore, document and share their understanding of an issue or opportunity of personal significance.
